Ferndale Open Door Health Clinic's Future: A Shift in Focus and a New Direction
The Ferndale Open Door health clinic, a pillar of the Eel River Valley community for over a decade, is undergoing a significant transformation. This change is not just about moving physical spaces but also about reshaping the very essence of healthcare delivery in the region.
A Move to Fortuna
Starting August 17, 2026, Ferndale's primary care services will relocate to the Fortuna Community Health Center. This decision is driven by the recognition that Fortuna's larger facility, more extensive care team, and additional resources are better equipped to meet the evolving needs of the community. With 10 full-time doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants, Fortuna can provide more reliable access to care and better support for patients.
Margaret Lee, PA, and the dedicated Ferndale staff will join the Fortuna team, ensuring a seamless transition for patients. This move addresses the challenges of provider coverage and support during staff absences, enhancing the overall patient experience.
A New Vision for Ferndale
While the move to Fortuna strengthens primary care, Open Door is also embracing a new vision for Ferndale. The clinic aims to transform the former Ferndale center into a specialized senior care center, catering to the growing number of elderly residents in the Eel River Valley.
This new model of care will provide older adults with the extra support, care coordination, and services they need to maintain their health, independence, and connection to the community. Tory Starr, CEO of Open Door Community Health Centers, emphasizes the dual benefits of this approach, stating, 'This change allows us to strengthen primary care in Fortuna while creating something new and exciting in Ferndale.'
Community Commitment
Despite the changes, Open Door remains deeply committed to the Eel River Valley. The organization will continue to invest in the health and well-being of the community, working collaboratively to shape the future of healthcare in the region. Current patients are encouraged to reach out for support during this transition, ensuring a smooth and supportive process.
A Thoughtful Evolution
This strategic shift reflects a thoughtful evolution in healthcare delivery, addressing the changing needs of the community. By adapting to the growing senior population and leveraging the strengths of both locations, Open Door is poised to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care for years to come. The future of Ferndale Open Door promises a blend of continuity and innovation, ensuring the well-being of the Eel River Valley's residents.
